Teh Tarik
Teh = tea
Tarik = Pull
Price = RM 1.20 to 2.00 depending on the place.

Hot bubbling tea.
Among hot beverages of Malaysia, it is considered as national drink.
It is served hot and prepared in a similar way we prepare coffee in south, pulling it from one tumbler to another. But do you see something strange in this photo ?
Look again !
There are some ice cubes in the saucer !
I broke my head thinking why so. When something is served boiling hot, why the bottom is being cooled?
I tried to ask but since I was dealing with absolute locals all through my trips, language was a major barrier. And sign language is not always as effective as we want it to be.
Most of the times, answer of ‘why’ will be given as answer to ‘what’.
Probably Anjuli can help here. ![]()

My hubby says the ice cubes on the plate to cool down the teh tarik- without making it cold. He said when he was growing up in Malaysia it was a common thing for them to put ice cubes on the plate just to take off the boiling hot edge.

Anjuli,
Now, that’s called an answer coming from the expert !
I was also thinking on that cooling thing but no one could tell me so. I think I need to learn the language now.
When I couldn’t get an answer there, there was only one name in my mind and you know who was that.
Do you know, I have been a keen observant of these things wherever I go and like to share these intricacies with my people back home?
