An architectural treat that is Bangunan Sultan Abdul Samad.

I could see an architecturally pleasing heritage building right across the Jalan Raja when I visited the independence square, a.k.a. Merdeka Square. That day I didn’t have much time to explore it, so I had promised myself another day to go there again. The Sultan Abdul Samad Building or as it is called in Malay Bangunan Sultan Abdul Samad is on one side of the Merdeka Square. Obviously you cannot miss it at all.

The architecture has its similarity to Muslim architecture in India and Africa that predated the building plans. Also similar to some buildings I saw in Spain during my recent visit. This is probably during the reign of Moors in these parts. The Samad building itself is over 100 years old. More than the building and its dome I really loved its red white brick work.
This building serves as an imposing backdrop during national festivities at the Independence Square. I am told the whole building is brightly lit and is a spectacle to behold! Much like the illumination of Government buildings in Delhi during Republic day.

I crossed over to have a closer look and see if there existed a possibility of going inside. Well, I could not. It is an office now. I suppose we will have to wait till it is converted into a museum or something. During the height of British reign it housed the Supreme Court and the high court of Malaya but now it houses the cultural ministry among others.
The central Clock tower is capped by a copper dome. Compared to copper domes elsewhere in the world that is oxidized to a bluish green tinge it still shines. I think the ministry gives it a regular clean up and polish.

Do visit this place when you are in Kuala Lumpur. I am sure, you’d not regret it.
