In Malaysia, my way of trying a juice was to put my finger on a name and ask for it. I refused to see a dictionary for its meaning or ask somebody who knew English. I wanted to know them by taste.
At times it resulted in disastrous distasteful situations but I was also glad that I could pick up some names. Also, I paid attention when they pronounced the names.

I have tried each one of these and a few more which are not mentioned in this list. My favourite was Jus Tembikai.
The locals were quite surprised to see me pronounce it correctly. For your information, it sounds like a Tamil word.

Jus Buah-Buahan.

Jus buah = Fruit juice

Now it is your turn. Can you tell me all names correctly ? What do they mean? Fairly easy, I must say.
Ok, no cheating. No Google. Let’s see who comes close to correct answers.

P.S.- I am travelling right now. The previous post was scheduled one and so is this. Some more posts are scheduled which will keep popping up.
Please be punctual and regular till I come back. And remember, I am going to peep in between.

Till then ciao ! Terima kasih.

Travellers have certain amount of vulnerability and uncertainty attached to them. They are not aware of the tricks played by locals and they invariably fall for it.
I was no exception and at times I too fell for certain tricks.

1. Hotels & credit cards – After a tiring bus journey to a new town & after checking 3-4 hotels/guest houses as per my budget I did not have anymore strength or patience. Then I check the last decent place. It has fair tariff, and accepts credit cards as well ! Since I do not have much cash on person what do you expect I would have done ?

I check the rooms and select one. Bargain to further lower tariff (small hotels are always open for negotiations). I know I have struck a good deal. I decide to take the offer.

While I take out my credit card for payment, I am served water and such likes; my luggage is ready to be transferred to my room. I quite like the hotel & its warm hospitality and have already switched on my relaxing mode.

The man at reception swipes my credit card & tells me the bad news. My card isn’t working. I take out another card… same fate. If I have only one credit card, then definitely my credit card is faulty else the machine has suddenly stopped working and repair will take 2-3 days. They might even ‘call’ service center in front of you !

Now, since the deal is good and I am tired; I don’t want to start hunting again.

They are also considerate… advise me to pay cash even if I have very little. I can at least move in. Rest I can pay later.
I am flattered, “This is the hotel I should recommend to everybody”.

Next morning I am reminded of their daily accounting which needs to be settled (they are not very big, you see) and am guided to a nearby ATM machine or the money changer as the case may be. They reassure me to give a cashback against credit card once their machine is repaired.

Now, if your stay is more than one day, you’ll be doing this exercise everyday…. hoping to pay the balance amount by credit card and get a cashback for entire amount.
You are mistaken.
The machine will never be okay for you. Because it never stopped working !!

It will still accept Debit card if you are willing to show one. The fact is, you end up paying either by cash or debit card.

It is a trick played by small budget hotels/ guest houses all through Malaysia. They don’t want to turn away a customer by saying a ‘NO’ to credit card acceptance.
It happened with me in Kuala Lumpur, Cameron Highlands and Alor Setar. Three different places, three different decisions for one single trick.
So, the first time your credit card is rejected by a ‘faulty’ machine, think twice what you want to do.

The major touristy cities are busy and bustling with life while the hills are quiet and calm. The people are very helpful and friendly everywhere even if they don’t understand your language.

Trisha in Malacca

I consider myself a traveler more than a tourist. Obviously, we wanted to see and live the real Malaysia. We wanted to see its people and learn something about them and their country. So, booking a packaged tour was out of question even though it is far more comfortable and hassle free.

As I have mentioned earlier, we had booked just the air-tickets to & fro Mumbai with Malaysian Airlines and nothing else. We wanted this trip to be an adventurous one from every point including our stays. Nonetheless, we stayed in all sorts of places; from decent ones to frill free shared baths types. The credit for the latter goes to me.
More details on this later.

Kek Lok Si Temple, Penang. Can you notice something here?

We did not have any fixed agenda. To start with, before leaving India we had at least 5 places in our mind for our 12 day break. Some of them got swapped with new ones because of some reason or the other but that was all part of the game. We enjoyed the change and unexpectedness.

I loved the beautiful, wide roads of Malaysia and the open space.

I had read somewhere, the roads are not that good once you are out of Kuala Lumpur but I think it is a perception of an individual coming from probably a much more developed country. As an Indian, I can say that unlike India, the roads are well maintained throughout the country and not only in cities.

On way to Cameron Highlands. Can you see clouds kissing the mountains ? And the road ?

You can see both Petronas twin tower & KL tower in this picture

I don’t know how they managed to do it but there is absolutely no slum in any of the city that we visited. I think the cities here are developed on the pattern of Singapore.
If we speak about Kuala Lumpur, plenty of open space, parks, skyscrapers and a good transport system are part of it.

When I called Malaysia a reflection of real Asia, how could one even assume there would not be any cheating, begging, pick pockets or taxi drivers not going by meter !
I loved the atmosphere there. One does not feel homesick.

The main religion of Malaysia is Islam but there is no dearth of Hindu temples, churches or Buddhist places of worship.

Conservative and yet subtly open to PDA (Public Display of Love), at least in the cities. That’s Malaysia.

I will be writing on all aspects of this country from people, places, places of stays, price tags, transports, food and tips etc. I am sure; you will gain something if you ever plan to visit this country.
