Why should you visit London now!

London has always enjoyed a cherished place in the heart of Indian travellers and tourists alike and of mine as well. For me, it has always been ahead of even Paris. So much so if you have not been to London then you have not travelled! Alternately, if you have been to London then nothing else matters. 🙂 🙂

While the people of India may want to travel to London so much, the GBP, in the past had been steadily climbing. But happy days are here again. Last few months INR has been gaining ground against the Pound Sterling. Timing is perfect with Christmas and New Year just round the corner. So get your paper and pencil to start planning your visit to London with British Airways.

Following are a few things to do this winter in London, in addition to the usual sites.

Visit some of the Christmas markets along the Thames. Beat the cold with mulled wine and make your purchases. Oh, how much I miss mulled wine! Of course Christmas markets are there everywhere with their many wooden chalets selling toys, accessories decorations etc. Go on, pick up that last minute bauble!

On Christmas Eve and New Year Eve take up your positions for the quarter hour fireworks show at Thames at the stroke of mid night. Maybe you could take your positions in one of the London eye capsules to watch this phenomenal pyrotechnics.

Can shopping be far away! Shop till you drop in Regent Street and Oxford Street. As an esteemed client of British Airways, get exclusive shopping offers. Or just enjoy the Christmas Lighting, while sipping (did I say it before?) mulled wine.

Go Pubbing. No visit to London can be complete without enjoying the hospitality of London Pubs. Find the watering hole that serves your favourite winter warmer. During Christmas many pubs also serve their innovative concoctions and many of them have theme based decorations that are just beautiful.

For the sporting type. Several open-air ice skating rinks spring up during this time. The rinks are mostly near historical places and offers spectacular views in the background. Evenings are especially beautiful with all the colored lighting keeping the darkness in abeyance.

Ice Sculptures at Canary Wharf exhibits world sculptures carved out of huge blocks of ice. This reminds me of various ice sculptures I have seen in many cities. While it was not held last year, we hope it returns with a bang and is a must visit if stick around till end of January 2017.

Head to Hyde Park for one of the biggest winter fairs, the Winter Wonderland. Enjoy ice skating and circus, later rest your tired self and warm up with a glass of …  you guessed right, mulled wine. This is a one-stop place of amusement for children and adults both.

Keep your fingers crossed for a white Christmas in London and make your plans to stay on well in into the New Year 2017.

  1. London is one of our favorite cities, especially at Christmas. Sure, it’s cold and the days are shorter, but nothing beats the atmosphere and the energy in the streets on Christmas and New Years 🙂

  2. I keep seeing so many amazing photos of London at Christmas. With the Sterling Pound at a low against my currency, I should be rushing there. Maybe during the new year I will pop in again before the crowds clog the city.

  3. living here in London, we definitely know that the British pound has taken a beating post-Brexit uncertainty. It’s definitely a good time to visit and Christmas is always cool in the city. I definitely prefer it to Paris, even to visit and definitely to live.

  7. I am originally from Australia but leave in London. I came here for a year and 15 years later we are still here, so I understand what you are saying. The only thing I don’t like about this amazing place is the crowds but the history and everything else amazing. Nice post

  8. As we had enjoyed Christmas and New year celebrations in London we totally agree with you that no place is like London during festive season! Whole city looks like a fairyland with lots of fun and amazing stuff to do an see in every corner!

  9. Ever since I was a little kid, I’ve wanted to visit London. It might be touristy there is something very appealing to me about all the famous landmarks like Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, West Minister Abbey which were then replaced by nothing else but Platform 9 & 3/4s. However most of all it’s been that desire to watch a game of test cricket at the Lords – preferably and England vs Australia

  10. It’s such a lovely city and Christmas time would make it extra special. I love the idea of wandering the holiday markets with a cup of mulled wine and checking out the ice sculptures, we’ve loved seeing them in Japan.

  14. I moved to UK last year but have not been to London yet 🙂 Love the Christmas markets here in England they are so much fund to shop and get into festivities! You have a great list of holiday things to do. With the decline in GBP Now is a great time for anyone to visit UK or London. I keep telling my family this but they won’t listen, come visit me, You won’t get better exchange rates and the Pound I imagine will start climbing again, just like the dollar did.

  15. I have just returned from London, for a day trip to the Christmas markets. It was really beautiful but I would suggest to visit places like Bath instead. I found London to be overcrowded and that ruined the experience for me.

  16. I live in Paris and visited London about six weeks ago. I couldn’t agree more! It’s time to get to London. With the pound down and Christmas season, it’s a perfect time.

  17. Great post! I do love London at Christmas, the way the streets are lit up is magical. I went to winter wonderland a few weeks ago and it was great! If you go make sure to get a mulled cider. I’m in New York at the moment and mulled cider over here is just warmed apple juice! No alcohol?!

  18. It is surprising to me the most people in India wants to fo to London so much. So many nice places around the world! I really can’t wait to go to London, it is long overdue.

  19. I totally agree with you about London! It is my favorite city in the world as well. There are so many things to do there and especially at Christmas it is amazing.

  20. London, London, London! I absolutely love it – so much so that it’s home for more than a decade. It’s true, this time of the year it’s even more beautiful, with the Christmas lights.

  21. London is up there on my list too. Still haven’t made it there but I figure it’s one of those places that would be easier than some so I can do it a bit later in life. Markets, pubs, oh my! I can’t wait. Going during the holidays sounds fun too.
