Plan a weekend with the children this winter and enjoy some quality time with them before it is too late to make you forget just how wonderful a time Yuletide can be without the presents and the mountains of toys.
Between mid-November and the beginning of January, the famous Albert Docks hosts to a unique Santa’s sorting office for the children to enjoy. Get crafty with your young ones and write some letters to Santa with their toy wish list. Decorate them with glitter and sparkle, and explain they’ve been nice this year. Found on the Colonnades, the Sorting Office will ensure that those prized Santa letters will reach the North Pole in time, with the help of an army of elves. Until the 13th December, the Sorting Office runs amok by busy elves organize letter delivery and makes a perfect afternoon in Liverpool. Plus, if you donate a fiver to the reputable charity, NSPCC, Santa will reply to your kids and the magic will begin.
You can find affordable hotels in Liverpool, offering family rooms, so you can enjoy some time away with the kids, for less. Whilst you’re there, admire all the twinkling lights. Whatever your reason for heading towards the Albert Dock – whether it’s for some last minute shopping, some family fun or a cheeky drink, it’ll have it and the Christmas spirit will begin to flow.
Celebrate Charles Dickens’ 200th birthday and catch a showing of A Christmas Carol at St George’s Hall. This classic tale of Christmas is a must-see for everyone at some point during their lives. This one in particular would be particularly incredible because it’s performed by Dickens’ great-grandson, Gerald. Why put off to tomorrow, what you could do today? You can book your evening or matinee tickets online here – the afternoon show is particularly ideal for families due to the early finish.
Take your children on a wander around the authentic wooden chalets that make up the Liverpool Christmas Market. With over 50 food and gift stalls, including handcrafted wares and European culinary delicacies, the Liverpool Christmas markets have drastically improved over recent years. For the grownups, check out the new German Gluhwein bar for a tipple of some warming mulled wine.
Alternatively, for the ultimate shopping experience in the city, Liverpool ONE gives you access to a huge collection of big brands and high street names. Firm family favourites include the Build a Bear Workshop, the Disney Store and the LEGO shop – perfect for some last minute additions to the Santa sack.
Take your children to visit the Cairngorm reindeer at Queen Square during December (6th, 13th, and 20th) before they head back to the North Pole.
If you prefer a little charity and would love to give a little back to the community, the RunLiverpool Santa Dash is the UK’s largest festive fun run and held on the 2nd December. There’s also a mini-dash for the under-12s after the main race has finished.
