I am ashamed to say that we Indians have no civic sense, responsibility or duty towards society. It is beyond my thinking how even so called ‘educated’ people can be so ignorant or probably they choose to be ignorant.
The other day I was told by someone who landed at Mumbai international airport, how Indians pounced upon a trail of trolleys coming their way, just to be the first in race to collect baggage.
There are many fronts where we behave worse than animals but today I am talking about only cleanliness & hygiene which is foremost challenge for us.
The picture says it all !
It’s a common sight to see people driving a BMW or a Merc and throwing a bottle, empty packet of chips or a cigarette out of its window. How many times have we seen a college student opening a candy, popping it in & throwing the wrapper in air, without even looking for a trash can? Not only on the road, these things can be seen scattered everywhere including trains & buses.
Peeing on roadsides is considered Indian men’s birthright. I do not even want to mention about the condition of our public toilets. You don’t have to look for a sign board, the stink will guide you.
Once in Delhi Metro, a kid wanted to pee… his mother guided him to a corner near the door and lo ! He did it. When confronted, she and surprisingly the whole lot of people supported the act. They even argued & fought with the person who confronted her. ‘Baccha hai‘ mentality. This shameful behaviour is inherent in us.
Do you see any future of clean civilized India?
I don’t. Not in my life.
Obviously, this kind of uncivilized behaviour leaves most of us reluctant to even say that we are Indians.
These days Mumbai is driving a ‘Fight the filth‘ movement but I see no success in long run unless people change their attitude towards it.
A few days back an unmanned ship had created a havoc at Juhu beach. In spite of total traffic jams, thousands of people were converging daily to see it. The public had become over enthusiastic and the ship was like an alien to them. People had no qualms in contributing towards making the place more dirty and unsafe.
The filth was so much that ill-equipped cleaners had difficult time to clean the beach. After a point they also gave up.
The beach area near the ship was barricaded with policemen & lifeguards on duty.
Security at the beach had been beefed up many folds. Why? People wanted to go up the ship ! The area near the ship was barricaded and life guards were positioned near the ship. Once in a while I could also see helicopters hovering the place.
The half an hour we were there, it was more than what we could absorb.
Policemen & life guards sitting amid filth.
At the food court, plastic plates, glasses, tissues were strewn everywhere. The limited no. of trash cans were dying under the load. Rains placed icing on this cake.
View from food court. Don’t ask me how unhygienic food could be.
Can we do something about it ?
