Kovalam beach is one of the most sought after beaches of India, by International and also Indian tourists. So when I happened to visit Trivandrum, … well, what do you expect of me ? I made it a point to go there in evening even if it was for a short period of a few hours.
Beach is as beautiful as you could think of. It reminds me of many beaches around the world. The beach has 2 curves and some rocks in between…. but not as separated as twin beaches of Goa – Palolem & Agonda.
It has a bubbling, full of life, sea side market akin to Batu Ferringhi in Penang, Malaysia and it also has many small workshops cum shops like in Murano island in Venice.
You can get your tattoo done, or better still, do a quick course in yoga or get the world famous Kerala Oil Massage done at many spots splattered around the seaside.
The sand is very fine, white and pristine and any day cleaner than Goan beaches.
Kovalam beach at night.
One can find nice sea side restaurants along this belt for fine dining. Many of them will give you option to choose from fresh catch of fish, lobster etc. cooked to cater to your palate. If you want to stay there at the beach, plenty of choices to suit every pocket. From five star Hotel Leela to small shacks …everything is available.
How to reach
You can travel by train or by air to reach Trivandrum which is well connected from all parts of India and some countries.
You can either have a bus tour or there are three options for going to Kovalam beach from Trivandrum town.
Cab, bus or auto-rickshaw (The infamous three-wheeled contraption, a distant cousin of tuk-tuk).
Beach is around 15 Kms from station and 10 Kms from the airport. So 3rd option is disadvantageous if you are coming from station considering how they cheat any tourists.
Cab is a good option but quite expensive.
Best way to go there is to take a KSRTC Volvo bus. Air-conditioned, clean and regular. These buses ply on many routes.
