A video of Warli painting

Last updated on April 12th, 2020.

Today we are going to watch a video Warli painting that I shot a few months back. This tribal art was originated in Maharashtra, where it is still practiced today.

A Warli painter was demonstrating his skills. I asked him to tell history of Warli paintings so that I can record and show to the world. To say he was very happy, would be an understatement. 😀

When I requested him to narrate in Hindi for a broader audience, he readily agreed. Normally he does it in Marathi, his mother tongue.

He was very excited. It’s not a surprise that he was able to sell a few pieces to us. 😀
And I don’t mind spending a few hundreds to encourage or help the locals.

What do you think why would we do so ?

The Warli paintings are always based on a theme or a story. The main characters are made of triangles, squares & circles of this folk style of rudimentary painting. These shapes are symbolic of different elements of nature. The circle and the triangle generally depict people’s observation of nature. The circle is used to represent the sun and the moon and the faces of people, while the triangle is derived from mountains and pointed trees. Mostly squares are shown to be the square of the village or “chauk” or “chaukat”. More on this later, first watch the video on Warli painting.

  1. This was so fascinating!! I loved the insight into the Warli paintings- and can’t wait to hear more on that later.
On a side note, My daughter’s future mother-in-law speaks Marathi.
