Seven things I miss about Spain

It is Western Europe’s second-largest country. It’s got what many believe is the greatest club football team ever assembled. It has incredible architecture and passions that holds the key to understand its eternal appeal.
Spain!
I miss Spain, I miss it a lot … to the extent that it is slowly inching towards the #1 position in my list of European countries. And there are reasons why I do so.

1. Architecture –
segovia @lemonicks.com

Very few cities in this world are defined by their architecture to the same extent as Barcelona. Be it Antoni Gaudí work in Barcelona or Salvador Dali’s quirky, colorful designer house, it’ll leave your mouths open in awe. Segovia’s Aqua Duct or Seville’s Plaza de Espana, they can give competition to the world’s best architecture.

2. Beautiful outdoors –

Do you remember the beautiful locales where ZNMD was shot? Shall I make you jealous by saying that I visited it? 😛
The vast expanse when you go on long drives and wish that they never end. The aroma of Olives and oranges are just so refreshing. The natural serrated mountains of Montserrat that are also popular among rock climbers or salt mountain of Cardona, there is no dearth of outdoors activities.

3. Cultural extravaganza –

flamenco dance @www.lemonicks.com

I wonder what makes Spain such a cultural powerhouse, have never seen such passion for cultural extravaganza in any other country. Flamenco, shall I call it their national dance? I am always at the edge of my seat when I watch these shows and hear foot tapping of those wooden shoes making their appearance beneath swirling skirts. Whatever is their age, the people eat, breathe and live Flamenco. I have written about it here and made a video which I still watch with much gusto. Bull fights, La Tomatino, and many, many cultural festivals will teach you so much about the country.

4. Food –

food spain @lemonicks.com
Then there’s local food, which I’ve suggested is among the best in the world. I am always interested in history of food. When I heard about FREE Tapas in Granada (I wrote all about it here), I was wondering how they can afford it on all 365 days! Or the local desserts Yemas de Avila came into existence because they did not want to throw the egg yolks. I’ve written the recipe here, go try it. Oh! How can I forget the ever famous Paella and the local drink Sangria? I assure you of gaining a few KGs in a week’s time. This, I can say from my personal experience there.

5. Beaches –

Ibiza @lemonicks.com
Do I still have to mention about Ibiza? The whole world converges to its ever popular and clean beaches. There is no dearth of white sands and turquoise blue water. Nude, family, crowded or serene … choose a beach that suits your mood best. Not only Ibiza, there are other famous beaches as well and they are very popular with couples who come there even for the wedding shoots!

6. Markets –

local market in spain @www.lemonicks.com

Be it big shopping malls of Barcelona, Madrid or hippie markets of Ibiza or local organic farm markets for fresh produce, you can never get tired of spending time and money here.
Ah! Did I mention that the longest shopping street in the whole Europe is in Spain and nowhere else? All big international brands lined up on both sides of this street in Lleida challenge you to control yourself from not buying anything. Lleida is a small town just 2 hours’ drive from Barcelona. And Hello! Have you bought your quota of Almonds, Olives and Olive oil? 🙂

7. People –

people of spain @lemonicks.com
I am not sure if I can describe it in words. The hospitality & warmth I received in Spain, especially when I was backpacking alone in lesser touristy areas where English was scarcely used. I knew nothing of the local language. They helped me out of their ways and made sure that I was comfortable and relaxed. There are small incidents which I am yet to write about. These incidents and the people won my heart and made me think that I could go anywhere and anytime I wanted to.

  2. Spain sounds like so much fun, and it has got so much to offer! Love the way you have designed this post. 🙂 There is an instant urge to fly down to Spain. Architecture is an obvious highlight, but people and markets are things that you discover as you move around in the country.

  3. Renuka,
    Thank you.
    That was the idea. 😀

I always love to explore a place beyond the touristy things. I look for local stuff that interests me and teach me about the place. 🙂

  6. Having never visited Spain, I found your Blog really fascinating, I love visiting places which have great architecture and natural scenic beauty. All the pictures are amazing, they help in getting a better feel about the place, and you managed to capture some really great shots.

  7. I have heard a lot of good things about Spain. I am most interested in catching a flamenco dance session in Spain. And of course, some vegetarian exotic food is always on agenda. Well written post. 🙂 🙂

    1. Thank you.

Spain is rich in many things. You can find Flamenco dances everywhere and food is not a problem.

You can start with vegetarian Paella. 🙂

  8. Girlllll, I feel ya. I studied in Spain for a semester four years ago, and while a lot of little things bugged me, I do mis a lot of it. Hands down one of the most architecturally interesting countries I’ve been able to travel to. And, yes, I LOVE Segovia so much. I went twice. Watching the sunset from the top of the castle is one of my favorite moments ever.

  9. Spain is such a culturally vibrant and architecturally beautiful country. The food is great, the people are friendly and there are plenty of things to do whether you are a partier, a beach bum or a history buff. Next time I visit the country, I’d love to check out the outdoors and do some hiking! Montserrat seems amazing.

  10. Love this! Starting to plan a trip to Spain next Fall with my sister. I’m especially excited about the food. Good to know about the free Tapas in Grenada.

  11. Yep totally agree, Spain is our favorite place in Western Europe and I can’t wait to get back for many of the same reasons you give above, the beaches, the markets, the people, awesome country. Next time we visit we plan to hit Barcelona first and work our way down the coast. We will stop once we get to Seville.

  12. We will be moving from Germany here in a month and I have to say, most of these things are what I’m going to miss about here as well (well, w/ it’s German twist of course!) It’s so hard leaving such beautiful, wonderful and amazing places, isn’t it!

  13. I love Spain, but I can only handle the food for so long. Don’t get me wrong, I also adore the food but after about a week I just need a vegetable or a salad! A lot of the other things are reasons I can never leave Europe long term. I’d really miss the markets and lifestyle.

  14. Ahh yes I can see why you’d miss Spain! I’ve only travelled to a few regions, but I can’t wait to get back and discover more after being blown away by what I did get to see! The beaches in particular, and colourful towns had me hooked.

  15. I agree with you that the Spanish people are so friendly! We went to Andalucia last year and I’m keen to get to Barcelona or Madrid this year. What is ZNMD by the way?

  16. People write about how their visit was or how to get there, but this was something unique. I totally loved the article. And yeah I was a tad bit jealous when znmd was mentioned. The movie must be close to many travelers!. Spain is one place I know I will visit in the future and experience everything that you have talked about.

  17. Spain is definitely a country that is hard to forget. Yes, it has amazing food, culture and people. I studied in Salamanca and I couldnt agree more with you.

  18. I could do without the cultural extravaganza (flamenco) you talk about but it is true that Spain is a country with has many things to offer. I would be curious to know where all those pictures where taken!

  19. We loved Spain when we visited, and desperately wanted to spend more time, for pretty much everything you’ve mentioned, the beaches, the people, the food, the outdoors, the markets. Hope you have the chance to revisit soon 🙂

  20. I just love Spain. And the markets are fabulous! Especially in Madrid. Great post, thanks for sharing your thoughts on one of my favorite countries 🙂

  21. This is basically how we feel about Iceland. Sometimes places just feel like home, even when you’re not from that place. We also say we can never return to the US permanently to live. We’d miss the markets, fresh food and lifestyle we’ve come to love about Europe way too much.
